Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory

The Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory is directed Dr. Thomas. The laboratory is located on the third floor of the Richard R. Dean Biomedical Research Building located in the Piedmont Triad Research Park in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The laboratory assists investigators at Wake Forest University in the characterization of lipids, proteins, and other products from biological sources. The facility provides access to technical proficiency and instrumentation for moderate fee-for-service costs. New protocols and instrumental methods are developed and implemented for use by scientists and students. More information contact Dr. Thomas and visit the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory Detailed description of facilities.

The Protein Analysis, DNA Sequencing, and Oligonucleotide Synthesis Core Laboratories are directed by Dr. Lively. The laboratories are located in the Center for Structural Biology in the Bowman Gray Technical Center near the Reynolda Campus of Wake Forest University.

Protein Analysis Core Laboratory

The Protein Analysis Core Lab (PACL) provides the following services for proteomics and protein characterization: 1) identification of proteins separated by 1D and 2D electrophoresis gels using ion trap mass spectrometry; 2) quantitative amino acid analysis; 3) high performance liquid chromatography of peptides, proteins, amino acids, and other small molecules; 4) determination of protein and peptide molecular mass by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry; 5) two-dimensional gel electrophoresis; 6) N-terminal protein sequencing by Edman degradation. >> More Info

DNA Sequencing Core Laboratory

DNA sequencing is performed using an Applied Biosystems Model 3100 Genetic Analyzer. DNA sequence results are posted on the core lab web site for easy retrieval within two working days of receipt of the sample by the laboratory. Typical read lengths are 600-700 bases for high quality DNA and primers. >> More info

Oligonucleotide Synthesis Core Laboratory

The DNA synthesis core lab synthesizes custom-made DNA and RNA oligonucleotides, oligonucleotides with phosphorothioate linkages, nucleotides with chemically modified bases, larger scale syntheses, as well as other custom syntheses. The oligonucleotides are synthesized on an automated Applied Biosystems Inc. Model 394 DNA/RNA synthesizer. >> More info
